Jamie and Jorge discuss the first half of State & Revolution Chapter 5, "The Economic Basis of the Withering Away of the State." In this chapter, Lenin does the Full Monty and tells us how he believes the transition from capitalism to communism is likely to go, drawing from his interpretation of Marx and Engels. He insists throughout that, unlike the utopian socialists, he's presenting a theory that is grounded in "science." Do we buy it?

Building on the discussions of the State in Chapter Two and Three, Lenin further interrogates the relationship of the State with socialist revolution. Unlike previous chapters, Lenin decides to draw from Engels rather than Marx for a variety of topics regarding the State, such as the "planlessness" of capitalism, how socialists should view the liberal democratic republic, how Engels argued for Democratic Centralism, and how to "overcome" democracy. We have decided to split this chapter into two halves given this is the longest chapter in State and Revolution. This is the second half of our discussion on this chapter!

Unlike previous chapters, Lenin decides to draw from Engels rather than Marx for a variety of topics regarding the State, such as how to house workers under a dictatorship of the proletariat and how Anarchism differs from Marxism. After some necessary detours to learn about the Paris Commune and, um, the Gucci family, Jamie and Jorge return to State and Rev for a deep dive on Chapter 3. Drawing from the experience of the Paris Commune, Lenin explains the necessity of smashing the bourgeois state machinery and replacing it with a "dictatorship of the proletariat," a.k.a. the proletariat organized as the ruling class. What does this mean? What does it look like? Can the state really just wither away? J+J discuss.
