Today we have a diverse show about a range of topics. Nomiki Konst begins by discussing the need for Democrats to invest in state parties. Then, attorney Steven Donziger joins us to explain how Chevron is using their legal power to crush him, after he advocated for indigenous people and the environment in a case that he won. Now he’s sitting in house arrest, with his assets frozen, a victim of a system that allows corporations to rule the law. Later, Piper Winkler and Simon Narode take a closer look at Joe Rogan terrible advice for taking the vaccine, Bill Gates saying the US shouldn’t share the vaccine formula, and Rose McGowan telling Fox News that Democrats are in a cult. Our panel breaks it all down.

Steven Donziger is an attorney who is known for his legal battles with Chevron, particularly the Lago Agrio oil field case. He represented over 30,000 farmers and Indigenous people from Ecuador in a case against Chevron related to environmental damage and the health effects from oil drilling. The courts in Ecuador awarded the plaintiffs $9.5 billion in legal damages, which led Chevron to withdraw its assets from Ecuador and to take legal action against Donziger in the U.S. In 2011, Chevron filed a RICO suit against Donziger in NYC. District Judge Lewis A. Kaplan determined that the Ecuadorian court’s ruling couldn’t be enforced in the U.S. because it had been achieved through various offenses against legal ethics, including racketeering. Donziger was disbarred from practicing law in New York in 2018 and has been under house arrest since August 2019 as he awaits trial on charges of criminal contempt of court, which came out of his appeal against Kaplan’s decision in the RICO case. Last year, 29 Nobel laureates described Chevron’s actions against Donziger as “judicial harassment” and human rights campaigns described the actions as an example of “a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP).” Link: https://www.freedonziger.org

[Trigger warning: sexual violence] Marlon Peterson grew up in 1980s Crown Heights, raised by Trinidadian immigrants. Amid the routine violence that shaped his neighborhood, Marlon became a high-achieving and devout child, the specter of the American dream opening up before him. But in the aftermath of immense trauma, he participated in a robbery that resulted in two murders. At nineteen, Peterson was charged and later convicted. He served ten long years in prison. While incarcerated, Peterson immersed himself in anti-violence activism, education, and prison abolition work.
In Bird Uncaged, Peterson challenges the typical “redemption” narrative and our assumptions about justice. With vulnerability and insight, he uncovers the many cages—from the daily violence and trauma of poverty, to policing, to enforced masculinity, and the brutality of incarceration—created and maintained by American society.
Bird Uncaged is a twenty-first-century abolitionist memoir, and a powerful debut that demands a shift from punishment to healing, an end to prisons, and a new vision of justice. https://www.boldtypebooks.com/titles/marlon-peterson/bird-uncaged/9781645036500/

After a year of uprisings across the country in response to the death of George Floyd, his killer Derek Chauvin has finally been found guilty of murder. Nomiki Konst opens today’s show by reminding us that the case is not over, and there are three more cops who must still be held responsible for their actions that day. Later, Siraj Hashmi offers his thoughts on where we go from here, and how we can stop more police violence in the future. For today’s Wednesday panel, we have Jordan Zakarin and Simon Narode, who react to Nancy Pelosi thanking George Floyd for dying, George W. Bush speaking on the state of the Republican party, and AOC & Ed Markey reintroducing the Green New Deal.

Today is 4/20, and there is finally pressure in Washington to legalize cannabis federally. Legalization is not enough, because it alone does not equate to justice for communities harmed by the violent and racist war on drugs. Furthermore, will legalization actually help us? Nomiki Konst opens today’s show by discussing the justice issue, and the need to ensure that cannabis legalization is part of a broader reparations bill. Then, investigative journalist Amanda Chicago Lewis explains the complex legal (and illegal) cannabis market in California, and what that can tell us about the push federally. Finally, Benjamin Dixon and Napoleon da Legend join for today’s panel, to give their takes on cannabis legalization and the trial of Derek Chauvin.

Millions of Americans voted for Joe Biden on the promise that he will improve the terrible anti-immigrant policies that have been part of the United States since its founding, and which were made so much worse under Donald Trump. But President Biden continues to disappoint. Nomiki Konst opens today’s show by discussing the mainstream narrative that voters are pleased with Biden, acknowledging his accomplishments and shortcomings.
Then, Lucy Flores joins to criticize the Biden administration’s position on immigration. Finally, Esperanza Fonseca and Piper Winkler make up today’s #FemFriday panel, where they react to Chelsea Clinton on The View, Andrew Yang laughing off misogynistic comments, and the lack of representation of women in media.

The United States has a tremendous problem when it comes to immigration, and the nightmare at the detention centers is only a reflection of that crisis. Nomiki Konst begins today’s show by recalling a story she heard when she was in Guatemala from a man who was held at one of these detention facilities at the US-Mexico border. While this is terribly inhumane, Nomiki explains how our calls for economic justice cannot stop at the southern border.
Then, Professor Harvey Kaye joins to discuss the legacy President Joe Biden is building for himself, in comparison to other US Presidents. Later, Arun Chaudhary joins for a discussion about cryptocurrency, direct action, possible Russia sanctions, and Andrew Yang vs. the New York mayoral election.

This week, the country mourns again another man shot and killed by police. It doesn’t help that our political leaders refuse to do anything about it. Nomiki Konst opens today’s show by addressing the recent murder of Daunte Wright, and asks, “What is it going to take?” Then, Davarian Baldwin explains how the problem of policing does not stop with municipal law enforcement, but also extends to college campuses. He teaches us about how universities have become big businesses with armed police forces. Later, Alex Kotch and Jordan Zakarin join to discuss voter suppression efforts, John Boehner cashing in on weed, and how the Republican response (or lack thereof) to Matt Gaetz reveals the ugliness within the party.
