The Latino voting bloc in Texas is huge, and after swings towards Republicans not just statewide but nationwide, including in the most recent elections--what lessons have Democrats learned, and what can they do to keep the Latino vote swinging in their direction?
Dr. Manuel Pastor is a Distinguished Professor of Sociology and American Studies & Ethnicity. He is the Director of USC’s Program for Environmental and Regional Equity (PERE), as well as the Director of USC’s Center for the Study of Immigrant Integration (CSII). “Pastor’s research has generally focused on issues of the economic, environmental and social conditions facing low-income urban communities – and the social movements seeking to change those realities.”
He is the author of State Resistance: What California’s Dizzying Descent and Remarkable Resurgence Means for America’s Future and Equity, Growth, and Community: What the Nation Can Learn from America’s Metro Areas.
His other books include Just Growth: Inclusion and Prosperity in America’s Metropolitan Regions; Uncommon Common Ground: Race and America’s Future; This Could Be the Start of Something Big: How Social Movements for Regional Equity are Transforming Metropolitan America; Staircases or Treadmills: Labor Market Intermediaries and Economic Opportunity in a Changing Economy; and Regions That Work: How Cities and Suburbs Can Grow Together.

For this week’s #FemFriday Nomiki Konst is joined by Dr. Rajika Bhandri to discuss her book America Calling: A Foreign Student in a Country of Possibility. Dr. Bhandri is a global expert in international education, the author of six academic and nonfiction books and several publications that touch upon the themes of movement, migration, and crossing borders. She has written for the Guardian, Times Higher Ed, the Huffington Post, the Chronicle of Higher Education, University World News and Diplomatic Courier; been featured on NPR, PRI International and Voice of America; and been quoted in the BBC, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, the Times of India, and Time, among others.

Next on #FemFriday Nomiki speaks with Lucie Pinson about the climate crisis the movement to push financial institutions to divest from fossil fuels, and how Reclaim Finance, the organization she founded and is the Executive Director of, has made strides in this regard. Lucie founded Reclaim Finance in 2020 after several years of campaigning on the responsibility of financial institutions in social, environmental and climate injustice issues. From 2013 to 2017, Lucie worked as a campaigner for Friends of the Earth France. She convinced some of the largest French insurers, banks and investors to adopt the first policies to restrict support for several fossil fuel sub-sectors. In 2018, she started working for the Sunrise Project as the European coordinator of an international anti-coal campaign targeting insurers while continuing her voluntary work for Friends of the Earth France. Lucie holds a BA in History and Political Science from Rhodes University in South Africa and a double Masters degree in Political Science from the Sorbonne University in Paris. She received the Goldman Prize for the environment in November 2020, in recognition of her work.

On today’s program Nomiki Konst speaks with Frank Vogl about his latest book, “The Enablers: How the West Supports Kleptocrats and Corruption — Endangering Our Democracy.” Frank Vogl, former senior World Bank official and foreign business and economics correspondent for The Times of London, teaches a graduate course at Georgetown University titled, Corruption, Conflict Resolution and Security. He is the Chair of the Board of Directors of the Partnership for Transparency Fund, and the co-founder and former Vice Chair of Transparency International, a global non-governmental anti-corruption organization.

She was previously The Intercept’s Inaugural Ady Barkan Reporting Fellow, and prior to that she was a politics fellow in the D.C. Bureau. She has also covered breaking news and immigration for Politico, produced Politico’s flagship newsletter, Playbook, and co-authored their afternoon newsletter, Playbook PM/ She has also worked in international reporting at the Pulitzer Center.
