On today’s program, Nomiki Konst speaks with Connor Towne O’Neill about his first book Down Along With That Devil’s Bones: A Reckoning With Monuments, Memory, and the Legacy of White Supremacy. Along with now being an author, Connor is an educator, freelance journalist and producer. His writing has appeared in New York Magazine, Vulture, Slate, and elsewhere. He works as a producer on the NPR podcast White Lies, a finalist for the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Audio Reporting. Connor teaches at Auburn University as well as with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project.

For this week’s #FemFriday Nomiki Konst is joined by Margaret Roleke to discuss her article in The Nation “The USA’s Gun-Buying Spree,” as well as the ways in which her artistic expression serves as an urgent call for dialogue regarding the country and world’s most pressing crisis. Margaret Roleke is a contemporary mixed media artist based in Brooklyn and Connecticut. In 2020 she was awarded a Connecticut Commission on the Arts and was also awarded grants for public art projects at Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven and the Town Green District in New Haven. She will have a residency at Governors Island in New York City through the organization 4 Heads from mid August 2021 through mid November 2021.

Next up for #FemFriday Nomiki talks with Laura Packard about America’s systemic healthcare issues along with the latest case of obstructionism being carried out by a handful of representatives regarding the Infrastructure and Reconciliation legislation. Laura Packard is a health care advocate and an award-winning progressive digital/new media and communications strategist based in Denver, Colorado. In 2018, she founded a c3 non-profit called Health Care Voices to organize adults with serious medical conditions to tell their stories, and the c4 non-profit Voices of Health Care Action. She is the executive director of Health Care Voter as of August 2021, a national campaign to hold elected officials accountable for their votes on health care, and support those who are fighting to protect health care. She also serves as the executive director of Get America Covered as of January 2021, a non-profit focused on awareness and outreach for the Affordable Care Act health insurance exchanges through healthcare.gov.

Rounding out this #FemFriday in fantastic fashion Nomiki is joined by Lauren Ashcraft to talk about news of the day including but not limited to the challenges women face navigating America’s broken healthcare system, the responsibility that comes with a large platform online & if/when it’s alright to eat bagels. Lauren ran for the U.S. House in New York’s 12th Congressional District in 2020. She is a board member and volunteer with the Women’s March Alliance, a founder of Collection Box Comedy, and a lead with the Middle Collegiate Church Justice Committee. She is a comedian and activist who is now focussed on uplifting community members through her new show, Biting Commentary, where she eats “silly snacks” and brings on guests to talk about today’s most urgent issues. She broadcasts on Youtube and Twitter at 8pm on Sundays.
