On today’s program, Nomiki Konst speaks with environmental and human rights attorney Steven Donziger about his ongoing fight for freedom after serving what is now the longest sentence ever given to an attorney for charges at the misdemeanor level in American history_._ His “crime”? Successfully holding Chevron accountable in court for the destruction of the environment and poisoning of over thirty-thousand members of Indigenous communities in Ecuador. Now he’s being prosecuted and sentenced to 6-months in prison on top of his already unprecedented 2+ years in home confinement, all by entities that have direct ties to Chevron and those with the power to end this injustice remain silent. Many however are not remaining silent, as last year 29 Nobel laureates described Chevron’s actions against Donziger as “judicial harassment” human rights campaigns described the actions as an example of “a strategic lawsuit against public participation (SLAPP), and just last month the UN Human Rights Body ruled that Steven’s house arrest violates international laws.
